Basic SEO Checklist

SEO involves so many components, metrics, rules and ideas it is easy to get lost and frustrated. One way to simplify doing SEO is to make use lists. Below is an example of a basic SEO checklist. I use this as a “first glance” when looking at a client’s website for the first time.
- HTML/CSS Validation
- XML Sitemap (for SE)
- HTML Sitemap (for users)
- alt=”keyword” for images
- Title=”keyword” for links
- Keyword in URL anchor text
- <Title>Title</Title> on all pages Max 70 charac
- Meta description Max 155 char
- No more than 2 variables in url
- No more than 4 url depth
- Resolve canonical urls
- Less than 100 links/page
- No broken links
- HTML file size <150 k
- Limited text in Flash, Images, Java or Ajax
- Linkbait
- Analytics package installed
- All pages accessible by text link in footer
- Search Engine Submission
- Yahoo
- Bing
- Ask
